The history of our farm
From its first mention in 1269 to the present day: how Gigglhirn has stayed in the family over the centuries.
Key dates
- 1269 – First documented mention of the farm in the tax registers of Weingarten Abbey. The name probably goes back to “Guckenhur”, an old term for a smoke kitchen with a smoke hatch.
- 17th century – The ancestors, originally from Goldrain in the Vinschgau valley, hold offices as judges, sworn officials and members of the Tyrolean diet.
- 1614 – Emperor Matthias grants the family a coat of arms with a leaping chamois and the title “von Braitenberg”, partly for Johann Braitenberger’s part in defending the land against the Bavarians.
- 1938 – Grandfather Peter takes over the farm. During the period of the “Option” it is sold to timber merchants; the family stays on as tenants.
- 1947 – Thanks to a right of first refusal the family buys the farm back, paying off the debts over many years through logging and picking lingonberries.
- 1983 – The mother takes over the farm and continues to modernise it.
- 2000 – Handover to the present generation.
